Our need for storage space
Americans have a lot of stuff! We manufacture a lot of goods, and we buy a lot of goods from other parts of the world. It is not something we should be ashamed of, because all those goods that we buy with our discretionary income create jobs, and those jobs mean more wealth. More wealth, means more income which translates into the need for more goods and services, which create new jobs, and more wealth! The system works pretty well, but we have a growing problem of where to put what we accumulate. We want to address this issue on this site.
Lowering the need for storage space
If you can eliminate some of the things you know you don’t need, that is a good place to start. The chances are pretty good that someone else wants or needs them. The internet has made finding the things we need, or the finding the people who need the things we have, a lot easier. The good old fashioned garage sale will never go out of style, and there are also a lot of charitable organizations that could benefit from your excess. If you try those avenues, I doubt that you will have much that will need to go into a land fill.
Keeping and storing the important things
There will always be core belongings that you do not want to part with. Many of these may be a part of your families history. Some may be important records and other documents, perhaps a piece or two of furniture that doesn’t fit your current style, but is still valuable, and can’t be replaced, which you know you will use in the future. There are also the things we need to protect from the elements for relatively short periods of time, or between uses. Recreational equipment, lawn and garden equipment, tools, sporting equipment, and many other types of gear need to be protected and stored in a convenient place to assure they are easily available, and kept in good condition for future use.
Space to play and work
We also need space to use the things we accumulate. Exercise equipment often goes unused because there is no space in the home or garage to properly utilize it. Talents for hobbies and crafts often go un exercised for lack of space.
Storage buildings
The buildings which we generally call “storage buildings”, have become much more. They are now “utility buildings”, which can be used for many purposes. Storage is a modern necessity! We have more things, we often operate in less space, and and we have more activities that require space. Imagine having your own home gym, your own separate wii space, a room for watching the big game, a poker room, a music room, a hobby room, and yeah, you might even use it to store some stuff as well!
